Too Much Self-Esteem

Dear Friends, On the way to work today, I turned on the radio and stumbled across a national talk radio program. It’s not a station I normally listen to, but this morning the host was interviewing a pastor about a recent situation in which a teenager had shot another teenager. Having tuned in to the program halfway through, I wasn’t sure of all that had been talked about before, but was curious to hear the rest of the interview, because right when I tuned in, the host asked the pastor, “Why? Why do we live in a society where one teenager feels free to take a gun and shoot another teenager?” The pastor sort of danced around the question a bit, and I thought that perhaps it was because he di

"It's Veggie Delight"

Dear Friends, Today I've been spending a lot of time contemplating the will of God. I think it's because there are a lot of questions our church is facing regarding how God wants us to continue to minister to the community now that our market has closed. So all of the wondering, and talking and praying over what God might have for us has left me pondering God's will and how we know what He wants us to do. This pondering led me to one of my favorite passages, Romans 12:1-2, which tell us, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice - the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly

Listen Up!

Dear Friends, This morning I came to the conclusion that my dog has selective hearing. In other words, when he doesn't like what I'm saying, he acts like he doesn't understand me. For example, this morning he was laying on my bed, and when I told him to get down, he looked at me as if to say, “What? I don't understand the gibberish coming out of your mouth.” And then he settled his head comfortably back on his paws and tried not to make eye contact with me. So I went downstairs, opened the pantry door and grabbed his bag of dog treats. Suddenly, he appeared. In an instant he went from completely deaf to having supersonic hearing. It seems that when he likes what I want him to do, he

Feel The Burn

Dear Friends, This past weekend our oldest son got married. It was a wonderful weekend of hosting friends and family from all across the country - and a wonderful weekend of celebrating the relationship God has given our son, and his new bride. But for those of you who have hosted weddings before, you know that it was also a very busy weekend - full of errands, and setting up and tearing down all the accoutrements that go with weddings. The result is that this morning I woke up with sore muscles that I forgot I even had. As I was slowly pulling myself up out of bed, I was wishing I had some sort of magic potion I could drink to give my muscles the strength they needed to get me through th

No More Leftovers!

Dear Friends, This morning I was reading in Joshua 14, and I came across the following statement, “I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then.” (Joshua 14:11). The thing that struck me about this statement is that it came from a man who was 85 years old! His name was Caleb - and he's one of the lesser known heroes of the Old Testament. And here's why I say he was a hero - he had amazing spiritual longevity. So what was his secret? Simple - Caleb fully followed God. That really stuck with me after I finished my reading this morning, mostly because spiritual longevity is something that I want is my life. I want

Dear Friends, When our children were small we decided to take all four of them to a local water park. I'm not sure what we were thinking, as there really is nothing fun about taking a 6 year old, a 4 year old, and newborn twins to an over-crowded place on a hot day. But there we were. At least we had the foresight to bring my father along as reinforcement. We actually ended up having a fun time, until we made the decision to choose a final ride and then head home. We went to gather the kids around and explain what we were doing when we realized that our four-year-old was gone. In the midst of all the chaos, he had slipped away from us into the crowd. If you're not a parent, you really ca

Jumpin' Jehoshaphat!!

Dear Friends, The other day I was watching an old black and white movie about prospectors in the California gold rush. In one of the scenes an elderly man discovered gold, and his first response was, “Jumpin Jehoshaphat!”. I laughed out loud when I heard it because, let's be honest, it's not a phrase we hear very often these days. Actually, I wonder if it ever was a common phrase - or if it’s just something Hollywood made up for crotchety old men to say in movies. But after I got over the humor of the situation, it did get me thinking about the actual Jehoshaphat from the Old Testament, and so this morning I decided to look him up. For those of you not familiar with him, he was a king of
